More on Reddits Poetry

On September 27th 2013, Café D'Vine hosted its monthly Reddits Poetry reading, specially themed "100 Thousand Poets for Change". The event drew poets and enthusiasts alike, all celebrating the international event.

100 Thousand Poets for Change is an internationally organised event which was started in March 2011 in the United States. Since then, countries around the world hold their own annual reading in September. The purpose of the event is to gather poets, musicians, and artists together for "a demonstration/ celebration to promote peace and sustainability and to call for serious social, environmental and political change", as stated on their website. The events have brought much attention to various issues through the work of poetry. Read more about the initiative at the event's site.

The organiser of Reddits Poetry evenings, Harry Owen, has been a member of Grahamstown's poetry community for many years. Since moving from Congleton, Cheshire in England in 2008, Owen wanted to recreate a poetry gathering. This experience he wanted to emulate was from the pub he often frequented for their open-floor "Poems and Pints" in Congleton.  He shared this idea with Dawn Long, the owner of the then cafe Reddits Books and Coffee at 29 New Street in Grahamstown. Long offered her cafe as a venue for a similar event and "Reddits Poetry" was created near the end of 2008. Although the name of the establishment has changed to Cafe D'Vine, the event is still known as Reddits Poetry, held on the last Friday of every month.
