The "Pop-up" Performance
The Arts Collective is an initiative created by Rhodes University student, Ntokozo “Ko” Wandile Mbokazi. The collective features poets, musicians and singers all interested in what Ko considers a “campus renaissance”. This initiative has drawn many followers and has gained a considerable media presence.
The first main performance of this year was postponed due to poor weather conditions. This event took place on the Drostdy Lawns, on the Mosaic. There, musicians, sound technicians, poets and singers alike gathered for the Saturday afternoon performance. As the afternoon skies began to gather into rain clouds, the show line-up had to pack up the equipment and re-group to discuss their best options. They decided to postpone the performance until further notice. While they were waiting, the artists used the time for on-the-spot music and rapping. These photos follow the day of the would-be event and then onto a later rehearsal the following week.
Their rehearsals are typically on Saturday afternoons in the Rhodes Drama Department and they also have impromptu rehearsals near theRhodes University cafe, The Kaif, during the week. However, due to academic schedules, the performance was postponed until next year’s troupe performance. Regardless, the group looks forward to new opportunities to spread the appreciation for the arts in public areas in order to increase the presence of arts culture.
